Testing the first virtual reality gym in San Diego

Mike Madriaga

In this segment, we toured Virtual Play Zone, the first ever virtual reality “gym” in San Diego.

Virtual Play Zone’s main attraction is the virtual reality room where players can try out the HTC Vive, one of the most advanced virtual reality systems on the market. With a selection of more than 200 games, players can choose from a wide variety of experiences, such as jumping out of airplanes, joining military offensives, interacting with magical underwater worlds, and even fighting off zombies.

The rooms are large and they allow players to swing, shoot, and punch without having to worry about real life obstacles. They are even equipped with plush couches for group gaming sessions.

Virtual Play Zone also has a large gaming table where players can jump on Xbox One, Playstation 4, and other advanced gaming platforms.

The virtual reality rooms cost $40 an hour for the first player, and $30 for additional player thereafter with a limit of four people per room.

Virtual Play Zone is located 2.5 miles away from City College, on 1699 Main Street. It’s close to Petco Park and the Convention Center.

Operating hours will be Monday through Thursday from noon to 10 p.m., Friday noon to midnight, Saturday 10 a.m.  to midnight, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The grand opening is Thursday, Oct. 6.
