City College will host its own “America’s Got Talent” on May 14 for this year’s talent show.

Every year coordinator Tandy Ward has a theme and in 2016 it’s “Keep Your Head to the Sky.”

Acts included in the show will be an acrobat team, dance, stand-up comedy, instrumentalists, monologue and spoken word.

Patricia Rucker will be performing an original song while playing the guitar. Derric McKinnie, who will also be performing, produced the beat that goes along with her song.

Rucker first wrote the song in high school. “It’s completely different than it was in my junior year. I’m so ready for everyone to hear it now,” she said.

Except for last year, the talent show has been at City College for nine years. Auditions were held April 15 and April 16.

Auditions to sing the “National Anthem” at City College’s graduation were also held at that time and singers will be featured in the talent show.

The talent show competitors will face a panel of six judges, with Ward serving as emcee.

Cash prizes and trophies will go to first ($500), second ($300) and third ($200) places.

Besides being a platform for student talent, the show helps to fund scholarships, Ward said. These include the Dr. Arthur Jackson Memorial Scholarship, the Professor Lemuel Lemons Scholarship and the Gloria Heredia Scholarship. All are available to students who have in interest in psychology and social work and counseling. All three scholarships honor former counselors of City College.

The tickets cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and $8 for students with valid ASG stickers. Tickets can be purchased through Ward in the Counseling Center in room A-107 and at Student Affairs in M-200.

The talent show will be at the Saville Theatre, starting at 7 p.m. For more information contact Tandy Ward at [email protected].
