“You Again” might just make you pee your pants

On her way home to attend her brother’s wedding and meet his fiance for the first time, Marni Olson (Kirsten Bell) learns that said fiance is actually her high school arch enemy, Joanna Clark (Odette Yustman) in the comedy film “You Again.”

To make matters worse, Joanna, upon seeing Marni again, claims to not remember her or the fact that she bullied Marnie to tears every day. But not only bride and future sister-in-law attended high school together, Marni’s mother Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis) was best friends with Joanna’s aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver) during their teenage years – at least that is how Gail remembers it. And so, chaos ensues.

Featuring well-known and experienced actresses Bell, Curtis, Weaver and less famous Yustman, this movie proves that female-driven comedies do work, despite common claims that women just aren’t funny.

Hilarious supporting actresses Betty White and Kristin Chenoweth add to the mix with priceless scenes that were clearly written especially for them. White proves once again why she is America’s favorite and funniest senior – her comedic timing is spot-on.

James Wolk and Victor Garbor as groom and father of the groom, respectively, portray their characters well, but the spotlight is clearly on the ladies. That is not to say that men won’t enjoy the film, as the jokes seem to transcend gender.

Next to the actresses involved, the writing is undeniably the movie’s other strong point. At some points in the movie, you will for sure miss some lines because you are laughing so hard.

Much of the humor is fresh and unexpected, while the few jokes we have seen before are still amusing. The story is heartfelt yet witty and when you think you know what is going to happen next, the writers surprise you with another plot twist.

While “‘You Again” is probably not going to win any Oscars or change your life, it offers great entertainment for two hours and promises to make your sides ache.
