Dance concert entertains audiences at the Saville Theatre

The Dance Department at San Diego City College presented “City Moves” a biannual dance concert performed and choreographed by students and staff on Dec. 6-7 in the Saville Theatre.

The show’s prelude started off with single male hopping and skipping across the stage in what seemed to be an interpretive dance. Then a flash of light illuminated the entire stage as the main event started.

The show consisted of 11 dances, eight of them being student produced and choreographed while the other three were by staff members of the dance department.

“It’s a fun relationship between the students and staff members in the show because not only is there a sense of togetherness,” Dance Program Director Alicia Rincon said. “But it’s good to have teachers there because they can really just have a hands on teaching experience with their students.”

It certainly showed a variety with the mixture of faculty and students. The audience even got involved during some performances.

Certain pieces really stood out, such as a jazz piece in which a young boy told about his struggle to find the idea and concept of life through his dance and words. The crowd really seemed to love this one because of it’s constant change in tempo, moving from a faster tempo to slower one within the snap of your fingers.

The other piece that really caught the attention of the audience was a hip-hop dance number that kept an up beat and consisted of five students. It was a sight to see because they had not only created their piece, but chose and edited their own music for the show.

“This is a larger show due to the fact that we approved all of the pieces coming through because it was a better outcome then we have had in the past, normally we have five or six pieces, but we were lucky enough to receive 11, it’s really going to be wonderful show, I hope, as we have put more than two months into perfecting these pieces,” said Rincon.

The audience screamed and roared while the curtains sank and the cast took their final bows. It left the audience not wanting more, but appeased with their performance.
