Hive Sushi Lounge, which is located in the East Village directly across the street from City College’s Saville Theatre on C Street, offers the neighborhood unique sushi rolls to fulfill any students appetite, and a relaxing environment to relieve some stress after a long day of school.

“We were ranked No. 4 on San Diego’s A-list,” according to head sushi chef Tim Manley.

Hive offers a unique vibe with their orange painted walls featuring paintings of bees, which give the illusion that the customers are immersed in a beehive.

They offer two happy hours a day, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. During happy hour a fulfilling meal costs about $10 or less, which is perfect for students on a budget. Happy hour prices are as low as $1.49 and max out at $3.49. The happy hour menu includes items such as fried avocado hand rolls, coco shrimp hand rolls and spicy garlic edamame.

There are unique rolls such as the “Yo! Roll” features shrimp tempura, crab, spicy tuna and cucumbers topped with salmon and lemon slices. This roll is like a hybrid version of a California roll mixed with a shrimp tempura roll with a tangy twist.

Not only does Hive offer great deals on food but they also have an extensive craft beer menu. Included in this menu are two house beers; the Honey Bee Ale and the Hachinosu, which is their house Japanese beer.

New to Hive as of September was the addition of the Nectar Room, which is a full service bar with unique drinks and their own food menu.

“We’re really focusing on bringing in a neighborhood vibe, our focus is the community of the East Village,” said Nectar Room head manager Bobby Beach.

The menu for the Nectar Room is small, but all items have an Asian flare. This space offers unique food from a bacon wrapped hot dog topped with Kimichi spiced slaw to spicy shrimp wonton nachos. For only $5 customers can get a basket of imported Japanese seasoned fries with their signature secret sauce called “Hot Mess.”

The Hive and Nectar Room offer the downtown experience without the normal downtown hassle or pricing. Best of all, you won’t have to drive around for 30 minutes to an hour looking for parking.
