Students have extra fun

City College students and athletes along with others in the community are participating as extras in a pilot for a Fox TV show, called “Pitch.”

The pilot is about a young pitcher who becomes the first woman to play in Major League baseball.

Throughout the past few weeks, the extras were used for crowd shots at Petco Park and flashback scenes at Morley Field.

Danny Wright, a broadcast major at City College, was assigned to be a part of the background crowd. He said that directors would signal the extras when to cheer and make noise.

“It was fun. It was very interesting to see the whole process of how they piece everything together. It was interesting to see the background of how the film is made,” he said.

Wright explained that he and the other extras were paid by the hours on the set. The wages went up depending on how many hours of filming was completed daily.

A few of City College’s baseball players participated in a flashback scene at Morley Field after one of their games.

Cameron Slader, an infielder for the Knights, suited up as an extra baseball player and was captured on camera striking out for a scene in the pilot.

“I’ve never seen filming in general before and it was cool how there was so much going on. It was interesting to see how much detail goes into one 30-second shot,” he said.

Slader’s teammate, Ethan Payson, also suited up as an extra on the field. He was instructed to act as the shortstop while Slader was striking out.

“I’ve always wanted to see how a show was filmed and it was very fun to be a part of,” said Payson.

Filming for the production started in March and there is still no word on when the pilot will be released for viewing.
