Student dies after gym class

Campus police confirmed that a San Diego City College student died after participating in a gym class on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Eric Dixon, 41, complained of feeling lightheaded to a fellow student during his gym class at the Harry West Gymnasium. Instructor Mitch Charlens was alerted and he proceeded to call 911 after Dixon began seizing.

“Campus police arrived on scene and began to perform CPR,” said Sgt. Jordan Mirakian.

“Dixon had a faint pulse and officers attempted AED (automatic external defibrillator). Medics arrived and performed life saving measures.”

Dixon was transported to UCSD Hospital were he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is not yet known.
