City College Dean of Instruction Randy Barnes is temporarily leading the City College Athletic Department as of Wednesday, April 16. The reason Dean Kathy McGinnis is not currently at that post is unknown.

City Times originally reported that district administrator Larry Maxey had temporarily taken over the position.

McGinnis, reached by phone Thursday afternoon, confirmed that she was not currently on campus.

“I’m fine. I didn’t lose my job,” said McGinnis, and declined to comment further.

As Dean of Health, Exercise Science and Athletics, McGinnis has led City’s sports teams for several years as well as the health department and the fitness center.

Interim President Lynn Neault was asked to comment Thursday on McGinnis’ status.

“It is the district’s policy not to respond to inquiries about employees due to confidentiality so I will be unable to comment,” said Neault in an email.

Phone calls seeking comment from the Pacific Athletic Coast Conference, which oversees Southern California community college teams, were not returned.

Several coaches contacted at the Athletic Department also declined to comment on the situation.

Maxey is the San Diego Community College District Associate Dean of Outreach.
