Academic Skills workshops available for students

If you’re interested in finding a way to sharpen your academic skills and help during the spring semester, stop by the Academic Skills Workshops at City College.

A series of diverse workshops will be offered throughout the semester to help students become better learners and gain skills or enhance existing skills to achieve their academic goals. Each workshop is designed to provide students step by step strategies. The topics covered will range from study skills and memory techniques to managing time and overcoming test anxiety to help ensure student’s success in college.

“We usually start with time management, it helps students manage time for study and work time without being overwhelmed with their schedules,” Academic Skills Workshop Supervisor Adela Powers said.

The workshops will be offered four days a week in the afternoon during fall and spring semesters at Academic Success Center in room L-205. They begin the second week and sometimes the third week of the semester, once students are settled in their courses.

This past summer semester, the workshops were offered for the first time. If the school’s budget allows, the workshops may be offered again next summer, which can help students that take accelerated or remedial courses.

Students are encouraged to visit the Academic Skills Workshops this coming spring and future semesters to build the necessary skills to succeed in their academic courses. All the topics offered are applicable to every aspect of college study and advancement.

“The workshops allow students to pick and choose which ones would be beneficial as well as to possibly get some credit,” Powers said. “They are on a walk in basis and there is no signing up required just as long as students are registered with the tutorial center.”
