After losing their home opener against Saddleback College 13-5 on Jan. 30, the San Diego City College baseball team was able to strike back by swinging to the fences and throwing fastballs as they have won their past five out of seven games.

The Knights were able to pull together a string of three consecutive home wins by defeating West L.A. (4-3) on Feb. 3, Cerro Ceso College (6-1) on Feb. 6 and Irvine Valley College (3-2) on Feb. 7.

Two of their three games, the team received clutch performances from sophomore Ray Jones and freshman Christian Broussard.

In the game against West L.A., Jones hit the game-winning RBI single that sealed the win and in the game against Irvine Valley College, Broussard cranked a walk-off solo home run in a 10th inning thriller.

Following their victories, the Knights lost to El-Camino Compton Center on Feb. 14, 6-3.

In the season so far, the team has a .268 batting average and a total of 35 runs.

After his clutch hit against West L.A., Jones expressed that the team can always improve and there is still a lot of games left where they can win more ball games as they are poised to become a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contender for that number one spot.

“We are definitely going to get better at hitting – this won’t be our last victory, there will be many more to come and if we play defense and pitch like we did (against West. L.A.) I think we are going to do great as the season moves forward,” Jones said.

The Knights will play their first home conference game on Feb. 24 against Southwestern College at 2 p.m. at Morley Field.
