San Diego City College Knights men’s tennis team dominated their last home game of the regular season Wednesday, April 5, against Mount San Jacinto College 9-0 making that the eighth consecutive win. The Knights have an undefeated record of 12-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and an overall record of 13-3.

The Knights clinched their first Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship under Head Coach Brandon Lupian on March 28, with a 5-4 road win at Palomar. They are scheduled to play in the PCAC tournament April 13-15 as well as play in the Regional State playoffs April 26-30.

Even with the pressure on, the Knights were not fazed and remained confident through the single and double matches. ”I knew we were going to win,” said Knights sophomore player Patrick Meier. He proved his confidence was not unfounded as he effortlessly won his single match 6-0, 6-0 and doubles match with Knights sophomore player Daniel Villa Rosas 6-0. Meier has played tennis for three years including one year with the Knights but says this has been the best season since he’s played for the City College team.

“This is by far the best record during my time,” says Coach Lupian. Currently ranked ninth in California by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Lupian has been through 11 seasons with the Knights.

This season, however, is the team’s first conference title championship.

Lupian identifies the team’s hard work as the reason behind their significant wins, stating “People say we’re lucky but we create our own luck … we created those opportunities, took advantage of those opportunities and it shows in our record.”
